“To fly as fast as thought, to anywhere that is,” he said, “you must begin by knowing that you have already arrived….” (Richard Bach, “Jonathan Livingston Seagull”)

Jonathan Livingston Seagull, by Richard Bach. Anyone who thinks this is just a book about a seagull needs to read it again. And again. And again.

Yes, Jonathan is a seagull. But he’s not just a seagull.

Yes, he’s a seagull who desires to follow his dreams rather than remain confined by the rigid expectations of the flock. That in itself is a lesson of wonder and wisdom, but even that is only the very beginning of who Jonathan really is, and what he teaches.

The byword of the decade, to the point that some people inwardly groan when they hear it now, has been “The Law Of Attraction”. The Secret
book and movie brought it out of the woodwork, though it’s been around much longer than that. In essence, what was taught in The Secret simplifies the laws of reality, which are malleable and mold-able, influenced not only by physical and logical things, but by dreams, beliefs, thought and inspiration. If you follow any of the prominent “Law of Attraction” teachers today, you will find many of them recommending this “little book about a seagull,” in fact.

There are many such teachers now. Everywhere you look, someone else is opening a “teaching ministry”, of sorts, in an effort to spread the “gospel” (and occasionally cash in on the fad) about creative thought in some way. Long before The Secret, however, there were teachers who attempted to relay this concept to their students.

One of the best known, and least known, of these elder wise-men was a seagull. Even when Jonathan first hit the bookshelves, and took the world by gentle storm, people who had the courage to read between the lines saw it as more than just “a book about a seagull”. In that light it was primarily promoted as encouragement to follow ones dreams, to allow oneself to march to a different drum if that was where the heart was leading. It was praised as a book about seeking self-growth, inspiration for those who wished to move toward their own heart’s concept of perfection.

Back then, I don’t recall too many people describing this as a book about the very nature of Reality. Of course, back then, I was thirteen. However, each time I have read Jonathan, I’ve seen deeper levels of meaning. It was not just Jonathan’s determination that helped him to grow, it was his ability to let go of the illusion of the physical world around him and allow his heart to believe that growth, even growth beyond what he had initially been able to conceive, was possible. It was not only possible, but it was a given, as long as he did not give up.

As an animal communicator, learning spiritual and life lessons from an animal is nothing unusual. That was a normal part of my existence long before I ventured into the realm of animal communication, in fact. The interesting thing, however, was that an entire generation of humans was picking up wisdom from this particular animal (at least those who could see the book as more than “a little book about a seagull”).

This is a book about a seagull, about a somewhat stubborn and unusual seagull, about a seagull who didn’t follow the rigid mores of the flock, about a seagull who learned that “Reality is What You Make It”. You would think that would be enough, wouldn’t you?

But even that only scratches the surface of what Jonathan is really about. It is about life, it is about death. It is about the nature of reality, and about what exists beyond what we know as reality. It is about growth, growth that goes so far above what we can conceive, that it may just go on forever. There are those who believe that Bach, when penning Jonathan Livingston Seagull, was tapped into some higher source, actually channeling ancient wisdom, rather than “just writing a book.”

I don’t know about that, but I do know that this simple seagull, this high flying bird, when read about with open eyes, open mind, and open heart, can relay some amazing lessons to the reader.

These, to me…to many of us, I’m sure…are very poignant lessons–lessons which I struggle daily to fully comprehend and embrace.

I think I need to read Jonathan again.

I was chatting in email with a friend this morning, and the topic of “vibration” came up. It’s had me thinking since, and as a pebble tossed into a pond spreads ripples toward the shore, those thoughts have led to this post.

Vibration. Everything, whether it is something we think of as living, or something we think of as inanimate, has vibration. Even the most stationary of objects is actually in continual motion. That motion may be at a level that only the most powerful electron microscope can detect … but it’s still there. If you examine any object, and continue to crank down your point of view until you are viewing its most base elements, you will see those little electrons whirring away, like tiny moons around a planetary body, a minute universe of their own.

Everything that moves … moves everything around it. The energy of that motion sends out waves of contacting energies, setting its outer space rippling in response. I’m made to think of the butterfly effect, and how a small change, or movement, can initiate waves of energy that spread outward, like those ripples on the pond, and effect untold numbers of possible events half a world away.

What initiated the ponderings that have led to this post, though, is not so much how small vibrations can effect distant events … but how each object resonates with those around it. Vibrations occur at various frequencies, and the norm is that adjacent objects, or spirits, or souls, or energies, have a tendency to vibrate on similar frequencies. When an object is not vibrating in harmony with the space around it, it is considered to be in discord. Think of playing a chord on a guitar or piano, and pressing a wrong fret, or hitting a wrong note: discord. It makes one’s teeth ache. It’s rather like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, vibrationally speaking.

We have all, at some point in our lives (sometimes over and over again), felt like we weren’t quite “fitting in”. Whether we are talking about the child who doesn’t seem to jive with any school-population cliques, or simply that over-all feeling of unrest, or dis-ease, that we can’t quite put a finger on, we are all familiar with the feeling.

Today, I’ve found myself wondering about this, and how that sense of dis-ease may relate to vibration. Everything around us is vibrating at a certain frequency. That frequency is affected by adjacent vibrations, which are affected by those a level out, all resonating in relative harmony as one tuning fork sets the next humming. Then, here we are, sitting in the middle of it all, and we are drumming out a hard rock beat while everything else is humming along with Beethoven. We are, vibrationally, in the wrong place at the wrong time. We are trying to fit our square peg selves into the round hole of the space around us.

It makes our teeth ache.

What can we do about it? It certainly will be extremely stressful to try to force our way through the current like this. The air around us will grate against our spirits, like trying to navigate the torrents in a blender. We could examine the vibrations around us, I suppose, and try to make ourselves conform. But if we are in a space where our unique vibration is necessary to us, despite the fact that its not resonating with the universe around us … would changing our vibration be a cop-out?

We might also try to change the vibrations in our own space so that we feel more comfortable. Although it’s impossible, I believe, to do this without at least minimally sending that change outward and affecting others, if it’s done gently and with good intent, that affect might be steered toward a beneficial one. Changing the aura of our surroundings can be as simple as playing music that feels good to us at the moment, or as complicated as moving to a totally new location. The key is to listen to our inner critic, find the thing that feels right, that soothes us, that makes us feel like we are a better fit, and take action on it. Changing decor, collecting images that feel peaceful, or simply spending time in meditation upon things that bring us joy, are all things we can do to change the vibrations around us.

Or, the third option, is of course to meet the first two in the middle. Compromise. If we use our emotions as guides, we can make some minor tweaks in our own vibrational energies at the same time that we change the energies around us, to find a space that feels more comfortable.

I look around me at the situation our world is currently in, with both waves of great hope, and ripples of terrible fear. I observe the vast numbers of people who are suffering from depression, from mental instability, from deep worries. Our world is going through some intense changes … some good, many not so good at all. Any change is movement, and any movement generates vibration. Is our human response to that vibrational change part of what is causing these various ills?

By changing our own vibrations, or by reaching out to our own personal space with intentions of peace, joy, love, and harmony, can we create a ripple? Can we become the butterflies that will eventually cause a global response that will counter-act all of the negative we are seeing in the media around the world?

I don’t know, but it certainly can’t hurt to try. At the very least, it may affect our own small place in space so that we feel better about the tune we are humming. We may not fit in on a global scale, those of us who dance to a different melody … but at least we will feel more like we fit in our own skins, with the potential of lightening the energies which immediately surround us.

On the first of November, the 2009 round of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) launches, and I leap into frantic first-draft mode. My story will be a sequel to a mid-grade mystery novel which was written a number of years ago. It made a feeble attempt at being an e-book, and now a new publisher has decided they want it in their line up. Not only that, they want to make it a series.

A series. Thus, when I actually found out about NaNo in time to enter this year, it seemed like synchronicity was striking again. My recent return to the Artist’s Way has reminded me to always listen when coincidences like that happen because, of course, there is no such thing as coincidence.

I’m excited. Can you tell?

The countdown to NaNo has done something else for me. The same new publisher has shown interest in a pair of short stories I wrote in the late 1990s, and has asked for a third, as a mini-collection. The pressing date of November 1st spurred me into getting that story out of the way before diving into the novel. This morning, I sent the whole set of three, final edits complete, in to the editor. Done! That story has been sitting for several months, partly done, on my hard drive. Once I set a focus on the writing, which I totally enjoyed, it was finished in no time at all.

It’s been a long time since I did any serious fiction writing. Although I write blog posts all the time, it’s not quite the same thing. Now, between The Artist’s Way‘s reminders about allowing the inner child out to play, and trusting the Universe to help with the magic of creation, and finally signing up with a writing challenge that I’ve watched from the sideline for years, I’m back in the swing.

… and loving it.

Although those who believe in the Law of Attraction know that it’s primarily thought that brings our realities into manifestation, it’s also important to do little things to act as if your dreams are already achieved. Setting little goals, and finding the inspiration to step toward them, is a key component to creation. For me, it was opening the book, and signing on to NaNoWriMo, that opened the floodgates. The magic has just started to flow, and I am excited to see what the future brings my way.

Have you taken little actions, only to find that things just start to flow together for you? I’d love to hear your story!

And now for something completely different….

Well, perhaps not “completely”, as the topic does tie in to one of my old favorites: the law of attraction. It’s often said that, in order to manifest the life of our dreams, we must take small steps toward that life. We must do little things as if we already have manifested our goals. Common analogies are cleaning out the junk side of the garage to make room for the second car, or dressing each morning as if you were heading in to the office of your hopes while looking for a new job.

Likewise, when the life you are believing for is one of greater financial abundance, or simply freedom from financial worries, it’s empowering to find little ways that you can live as if you have lots of money. One thing people who have lots of money do, is to keep track of it, and to pay their bills on time.

Oh, that was two things, wasn’t it?

Regardless….

Are you familiar with the collection agent scenario? With frequently seeing late charges on your monthly bill statements? With having to choose between feeding your kids and paying the phone bill?

I can certainly relate to all of the above. About a year ago, not long after I came home from the hospital, I decided to see money, and bills, in a different light. I made up my mind that, instead of looking at bill paying as a burden, and something I could never quite catch up with, I would look at it as a privilege … and be thankful, when I paid a bill, that I had the money to pay it.

I also took a free online basic budgeting course, written by Grandpa Terry of Home Money Help. There are a lot of “money help” scams out there, and yes, Grandpa Terry does sell a premium edition of his course, but trust me that this particular free course has no actual strings attached and it can be very helpful. The course helped me with a number of things but most importantly, it introduced the concept that one could develop a simple method of organizing bills.

Still, however, the course as taught didn’t quite do the trick for me. My own lifestyle, and ways of thinking, weren’t quite in line with the details, so I adapted pretty much everything to suit my needs. I created a binder, with plastic pocket dividers, one for each bill, and a front pocket for bills that were due. I set up a monthly chart of what was owed on what date to whom. I diligently applied myself to keeping things organized….

And still had way too much month at the end of the money.

It was in December of last year, after just managing to scrape a Christmas out of the pickings, that it dawned on me that the concept of “baby steps” and “doing little things toward your goals” could be applied to paying bills, too. I know I’m certainly not the first person to come up with this method, but it’s worked well so far, and I’ve had a number of friends suggest I write it out for others to try. So, here I am.

In our family, I would pay certain bills each month, and my hubby would pay the others. I took the bills that I paid monthly, and developed a system whereby I was paying a quarter of the monthly installment every week. This allowed me to see exactly where the money was going, it allowed me to keep much more precise track of things, and most importantly … it allowed me to make good use of the fact that some months have five weeks!

I started out, with most of these bills, with back balances owed and putting a chunk toward late charges. Within about four months, I not only had them all caught up … but I was paying ahead on several. Do you know how good it feels when your cellphone company owes you money by the time the new statement is ready to pay?

The method worked so well, in fact, that I found I actually had money left at the end of the month … and was able to take on a few more of the regular bills!

After a while, seeing the success of the method on the bills I handled, my hubby turned over the rest of the bill paying to me, and I plugged everything in to my little week at a time method. In under three months, several bills were caught up, and we were paying nice chunks on the back balances of others. Most of our creditors are slightly confused, but pleased, and of the mind that “if it works, don’t fix it”. We’re also getting fewer calls asking where our payments are. That feels pretty nice.

I’m fairly confident that, by the middle of 2010, our credit rating will be on track, and we’ll be in a position where we don’t owe anyone any back balances. We will have reduced our financial worry significantly … one of my own visualization hopes realized.

The Method

It’s easy, it really is. All you have to do is gather your monthly expenses, divide each by four, and keep simple records of what you’re paying when, to whom. Keep track of your due dates, and if any are really sitting in the wrong place to make your plan work quickly, try having the date changed to fit in better with the process. I have a chart that I print out, with columns for five weeks, and columns for the creditor information, totals, etc. I duplicate the records in my checkbook register, as well.

Most creditors now allow you to pay your bills online, and have no restrictions on how many payments you can make each month. Occasionally you’ll come up against a company which will not let you do what you’re trying to do … either there is no online method of payment (it’s pretty comical that one of the few bills I pay that I cannot pay online is my Internet bill) or they put restrictions on how much you can pay them (one of our regulars, for example, has recently applied a limit to payments so you cannot pay more than three times the balance at a time. This doesn’t sound like a problem, but when you’ve got your quarterly payment set to, for instance, $20.00 and your balance owed is down to $4.00, they won’t let you make your full installment).

For bills that are a problem in one of those ways, we simply “hide” a quarter of the balance per week by marking it as “SA” (Set Aside) in the check book register, and we then “re-deposit” it when the bill is due. The money hasn’t actually gone anywhere, we’ve just taken it out of circulation until the bill is due.

To make it easier for anyone who wishes to follow the method, I’ve uploaded a blank form, in PDF format, with instructions, that you can download here:

Blank Weekly Bill Organizer

It’s not pretty, and not fancy, and you can probably come up with something better yourself … but it’ll give you a visual idea of how things work, if you would like to give the “More Money At The End Of The Month” plan a try. What I do is print this out, one copy each month, and fill it in as the instructions describe.

Why It Works

When you pay your bills monthly, unless you’re a meticulous budgeter, you are getting to them with whatever is left after daily expenses take their toll … such as groceries and unexpected needs. When you pay a quarter of a monthly payment each week, or set aside that money toward the monthly due date, you are in better control of your funds. One would think it means you have less for groceries, less for clothing, less for sudden medical expenses…. It doesn’t work out that way, though; at least it hasn’t for us. To the contrary, it seems like we have more money for day to day expenses, in addition to the peace of mind of knowing the bills are paid, simply because we’re keeping weekly track of everything.

In addition, you have that magical little “Fifth Week” some months, where you actually get in an extra payment. This helps you to catch up back balances, and get ahead on other bills. It helps you knock down the credit card debt a little faster, and store up a bit of buffer against future setbacks.

I’m certainly no financial expert; far from it. I know this method won’t work for everyone. It’s just something that has helped our family relieve some of our financial worries. Several people have been suggesting I share the method for a while now, so I do hope someone out there finds it helpful.

I also discovered a bonus. Now, I haven’t 100% verified this, but it’s been told to me by several people who are much more finance savvy than I: If you make extra payments each month, even if the total adds up to what you normally owe, those extra payments are considered “voluntary”, and they help your credit rating.

Perspective. When it comes right down to it, everything we do in life centers around perspective. It’s really phenomenal how our point of view can change, too.

The little things we so often simply take for granted can, with one bizarre turn of fate, become major issues. Things like walking, sleeping comfortably, being able to do the things we used to complain about (like weeding gardens and cleaning the house)…. It doesn’t take much to make one do a double-take and realize how important the seemingly unimportant details can really be.

Like being able to get up off the floor.

I did it today. Most people would say, “So what, I do that all the time”, but this is something I haven’t been able to do for over a year, not without help. I can recall a fall earlier this year: I went down hard in the kitchen and it took my husband and my son to get me back into the wheel chair. I was so weak, and still in such pain from the healing leg, that there was no way I’d have gotten myself up.

But today, I finally swallowed a silly fear, got down on the floor and did some Feldenkrais exercises, and got up again. All by myself. Well, I had to scootch my chubby butt over to the side of the bed and use the frame for leverage, but I still did it by myself.

It’s amazing the opportunities that have now opened up for me. I can do more of the Feldenkrais therapy that has, in past situations, been such a help to the healing of my body. I can even start morphing that into, and incorporating, some of the yoga that I’ve thought for some time would be helpful. I can start to gradually and gently strengthen my poor abused muscles so that more and more possibilities of movement and freedom (like being able to walk without worrying about toppling over!) can open up.

I’m so incredibly thankful! Yes, it’s a tiny thing, something most human beings do every single day of their lives without even thinking about it. For me, however, it’s a majorly wonderful big deal!

I got up off the floor!

If you’ve seen or read “The Secret”, or if you’ve followed my post here about Velma Gallant’s Joy Journal, you’ll know that I see gratitude as something much more than a word. I can remember being asked, as a child, “What’s the magic word?” and the answer the adults were expecting was, of course, “Please”. “Please”, certainly, is important to one’s life, but the real “magic word” for me is “Thank You”. Well, I guess that’s two words, isn’t it? But you get the picture.

Long ago, someone said to me that if you’re not grateful for what you have, how can you possibly have room to receive more? There are certain phrases and tidbits of wisdom we pick up as we wander through life that stick with us, and that is certainly one of my favorites. I’ve pulled it out of my memory attic many times, to remind me that being grateful is not just a nice thing to do, it’s an act of magic that can bring better things into my life, and the lives of those I love.

In “The Secret”, in the segment on gratitude, they discuss the gratitude stone. I still have mine, a little piece of pale periwinkle agate that sits on my desk. I don’t really use it all that often, as I have other tricks (such as Joy Journals and Morning Pages) that remind me to start my day with gratitude. Some days, there are little bits of thanks that help me to get a positive focus on the day. Other days there are monster-sized ones.

Tomorrow, what would probably seem like a little bit to others is a monster Thank You for me.

I know that, by focusing on today’s accomplishments with thanks, I’ll take even bigger and better strides forward in the future. I’ll walk more, walk stronger, then dance, then run. I’ll take strolls down the lane with my dog, and visit the rescue farm more often. I’ll get back to my horse-pal Zeus sooner or later, too, and continue the games we started together several years ago. I can hold all these things in my mind today with more confidence, and a greater sense of being thankful for what is true, even if it hasn’t manifested quite yet.

And all because I got up off the floor.

Velma Gallant is a friend of mine in the TUT.com community, and she is herself a life coach and positive-thinking guru. She helps dozens of TUT adventurers around their challenges, and through her websites, including Welcome Changes, she reaches out to many more.

Today I discovered a real little gem on her site, that just felt so right, I purchased it right away and have already listened to the entire thing. It’s a little audio seminar on the “Joy Journal”.

As visitors to this website are probably tired of hearing by now, I’m currently working, once again, through The Artist’s Way. This is a program that helps one to tap into the creative force of the Universe, to connect with the inner artist, and to bring forth works of creation of one’s own. To me, this also means help in creating one’s own reality … another step toward the realization of our dreams.

When I read the write up on Welcome Changes about Velma’s Joy Journal program, it felt like a hand fitting into the glove of my current life path. I just knew that it would be right for me, and I most definitely wasn’t disappointed.

I’m already writing my morning pages, through The Artist’s Way program. Velma’s methods are a perfect addition. Velma not only demonstrates that journal writing is a good way to help manifest the life you desire … she shows us just how to go about using the tool for its best effect.

Velma discovered the method in 2005, when changes in her husband’s business circumstances placed their family on the edge of a precarious financial situation. They needed a shift for the better, and they needed it fast. Within four months, the practices Velma developed in her Joy Journal turned things around for them.

For one who believes in, and attempts to implement, the law of attraction, I can easily see how keeping a Joy Journal might bring clarity to dreams and set them on a fast track.

I intend to start my daily morning pages, from now on, with the prescribed five minutes of my Joy Journal.

If you’re looking for a way to bring “this whole law of attraction thing” into better focus, I encourage you to check out Velma’s audio program. It’s a quick listen (only about an hour of your time) to a quick practice (just five minutes a day) that makes great sense and holds, I feel, great promise.

And besides … it sounds like fun!

I’m on my second journey through The Artist’s Way. I went through the book and program several years ago, and am at a point in my life where I feel it’s once again important to tap into the creative energy of the universe. With all that has happened in my life over the past couple of years, returning to “source” seems to be more than a desire, it’s an imperative, a soul-deep need.

It is “Week Four”. As I was reading through the text yesterday, I came across the following:

“… we learn what we want and ultimately become willing to make the changes needed to get it. But not without a tantrum. And now without a kriya, a Sanskrit word meaning a spiritual emergency or surrender. (I always think of kriyas as spiritual seizures. Perhaps they should be spelled crias because they are cries of the soul as it is wrung through changes.)

“We all know what a kriya looks like: it is the bad case of flu right after you’ve broken up with your lover. It’s the rotten head cold and bronchial cough that announces you’ve abused your health to meet an unreachable work deadline.”

Yeah, and it’s a crutch slipping on a marble hospital floor, landing you back in the wheel chair, after a week of abusing a bad leg traveling back and forth to the hospital to care for your dad….

As repeat visitors will know, for some time now I’ve been working through the rationale behind my health situation, and trying to plug it in to the progress being made in the creation of my new reality, the achievement of my dreams. It’s often seemed that just as I’m really starting to gain momentum, something like that will happen.

I look over the past events in light of the kriya, however, and things start to make a little sense. I got distracted, started pushing beyond the limits of what I’d achieved too quickly. I forgot about baby steps and, knowing I was abusing the leg, I started to let fear build. With fear comes negative imagery, and true to form, in a “spiritual siezure” of explosive manifestation, my visualizations became real.

Bang.

We know that emotion is an energizer. It fuels manifestation, both positive and negative. When we’re going through an emotional situation, it’s much easier for us to lose focus, let our concentration drift, and allow those fear-driven negative images in.

Likewise when we’re focused on something like a deadline, it becomes all-encompassing. It occupies our mind night and day and, similar to the situation that is emotionally draining, the intellectual drain can also let those negative images sneak into the picture. We don’t always even realize they’re there, though phrases like “I’m working myself to death”, and “this job is killing me” most certainly have been fluttering about the periphery. The intense mental energy put in to the task, because you’re not paying close enough attention to it, gets filtered into those sideline worries and the next thing you know you’re coughing up green stuff.

I become more and more aware, the more I learn about creative reality and the law of attraction, that the Universe expects us to be in control of our thoughts. We have been creating the life around us our entire lives without even knowing it. Now that we realize this, we can control those thoughts and encourage our world forward in a positive direction … the direction of our dreams.

When the kriyas occur, those spiritual seizures that derail us and toss us onto our butts, we can (after screaming and crying for a minute or two) examine the incidents in the light of why they happen … and what we can do to avoid similar situations in the future.

It’s tough sometimes to accept the fact that I’m in control of my destiny — even the yucky stuff. But on the whole, knowing that control is available, is empowering.

However: The first thought that came to me as I was reading through this section? A cria is a baby llama.

Since then, I’ve been trying to find a connection. Baby llamas can certainly be fresh little bundles of explosive energy, but that’s about the only association I could come up with. If you can think of another reason that a cria and a kriya might be related, please feel free to jot your thoughts in the Replies section of this page!

Visit Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary to learn more about crias and their parents, their cousins the Alpacas, and all the other animals who have found safety through this marvelous organization!

A profound exploration into the mysteries of the Universe. Infinite Possibilities is bestselling author Mike Dooley’s manifesto, revealing that we are literally the eyes and the ears of the Divine. Dooley shares that our “default settings” are abundance, health, and harmony, and he explains that once we grasp the truth about our heritage, thinking far beyond what spirituality has traditionally meant, it becomes evident that life, itself, is the ultimate adventure—filled with unending opportunities that day-by-day lead us to rediscover how powerful we are, how much we deserve, and why we’re here. With recognizable insight, lighthearted wit, and striking sincerity, this new work by the much-celebrated author elevates the lessons learned in The Secret, Choose Them Wisely and his Notes from the Universe trilogy to a whole new level. Prepare to be challenged and excited with this unique guide to living the life of your dreams—purposefully, lovingly, brilliantly.

Have I mentioned that I love tut.com, Mike Dooley and his daily Notes from the Universe? Yeah, I know … over and over and over again….

One of the reasons, among many, that Mike is my number one choice for Law of Attraction inspiration is his attitude towards animals. More than so many others, including his own inspiration, Seth, and the Abraham phenomenon which are both so popular, Mike appears to see animals as an intricate part of the equation.

Today’s Note really brought a smile to my face. I’ve recently relayed posts that are related to the thought; my recent issue of Creature Thoughts, relayed messages from Pree, and more. I love synchronicity … and seeing what the Universe had to share through Mike today really made my morning.

I’ve been working through The Artist’s Way again, and one reason I decided to do so, was because my view on the definition of “creativity” has broadened so much since I’ve been listening to Mike Dooley’s thoughts. Oh, I’m not saying he’s perfect … but one nice thing about Mike is that he recognizes that we each have a unique and wonderful definition of “perfect” that we can work toward.

What does perfect mean to you?

Do you feel that our animal friends are also working toward their own vision of “perfect”?

To me, “perfect” is something that, though I hope to get better and better, I also hope I’ll never quite attain. Why? Because as long as we are learning, growing, moving forward, life is exciting and interesting. To reach some highest, ultimate goal might get boring after a while!

The fun is in the chase (as my Salukis over the years would happily tell you). Catching the goal is great and wonderful, but the knowledge that there are always other goals out there to pursue is even better, still.

Or, maybe perfection is just that … a paradise where new adventures are always on the horizon, and all worries are left behind.

I haven’t been frequenting the TUT community as often as I used to … and I think I’ll get back to it. A weekly hour or two playing there, exploring the adventure, and maybe even purchasing a few treats to keep my inspiration levels up would be a nice reward. Don’t you think?

Would you like to join the adventure?

I’ve spent part of the day perusing a website a friend shared with me. While normally, I would post a link to any site I’m looking over, this time I don’t think I will. Although some of the thoughts of the person who runs this website are fascinating, and I have respect for all opinions, there is an undercurrent to the site which really disturbs me and goes against the grain of what I have been learning, and attempting to absorb.

That undercurrent, loosely, is one that speaks of irreversible negatives. (Or, apparent negatives, if you will.)

I, personally, do not believe there are such things as irreversible negatives. While I will continue to read through the site with an open mind, I will do so cautiously.

What follows is sparked by, but not directly referring to the aforementioned website. It is a gathering of thought that has been building for quite some time, and reading through this site simply prompted me to put it into words.

We will always have those who prophesy doom. Some of them claim to channel wisdom from beyond, others wisdom from within. They all sincerely believe what they say, of course, and many of them gather followers in vast numbers.

The latter is what worries me.

Have you heard the story of the Hundredth Monkey?

There was, the story goes, a group of biologists who studied the behavior of two groups of monkeys which lived on a pair of islands. The islands were far enough apart that the monkeys, though of the same species, had absolutely no means of physical contact with one another. They could not see or hear each other, nor were they aware, as far as anyone could ascertain, of the existence of the monkeys on the other island. While studying these monkeys, in order to ensure that the animals remained close enough to be observed, the scientists would pour a sack of sweet potatoes near the monkeys’ water source. These potatoes were fresh from the field, covered with dirt, but the monkeys ate them anyway.

One day, one of the monkeys chose to dip her sweet potato in the water. She discovered that her breakfast tasted better when not coated with dirt, so she continued the practice. Soon, the other monkeys in her group followed suit and, one by one, more and more of the monkeys were washing their sweet potatoes.

Monkey see monkey do … not so strange. What was strange, however, was that after a good number of the original island’s monkeys were washing their potatoes, for no apparent reason, all at once, large numbers of monkeys on the other island began doing the same thing.

The “Hundredth Monkey Theory” proponents observe that when an idea reaches some level of critical mass in a population, it will catch on and spread like wildfire, and quickly become the norm for the species (or the larger community), even without direct communication intervening.

This theory speaks to how so many human cultures, the world over, have various archetypes in common, despite having had no direct contact with one another.

This brings me back to my original point. I strongly (as those who’ve visited this site for a while will confirm, often rolling their eyes with that “here we go again” look) believe in what has recently come to be called the Law of Attraction (the power to form our own realities through Creative Thought). I also can accept the logic that ideas, whether positive or negative, have the capacity to reach critical mass and “overflow” just like the potato-washing did for the monkeys. If a prophet who is speaking negatives, such as damage to the planet that is beyond our capacity to repair, gathers enough believers, and that spills forth and becomes a common belief, so that vast numbers of people are holding that image in their minds, it’s going to give that possible future the impetus to become reality.

If one believes that the damage is irreversible, one will only shield themselves against it, and cease trying to make things better. If the Hundredth Monkey believes this, and it is true that this may cause the idea to spill over to the norm … we’ve sealed our fate.

(…) Not to mention that it makes things a heck of a lot harder for those of us who, despite the apparent circumstances, hold on to a vision of a bright tomorrow.

For some time, now, I’ve been wondering about “apparent circumstances”, as my visitors know. I’ve been asking “why”. What am I supposed to learn? What’s the bigger picture?

Perhaps the bigger picture is one of hundreds of monkeys washing sweet potatoes … of which I’m one. (A monkey, not a sweet potato.) Or maybe I’m number 99, or even number 100. Perhaps the bigger picture is those of us who, despite appearances, hold on to that hope, that vision, that globally positive image, that we can paint a future where the Earth is healing, people are getting along, wars are ended, wolves and whales roam and swim in health and abundance. Perhaps, if enough of us learn that “apparent circumstances” are just the dreamtime, and the reality is what we hold true in spirit, then that reality will begin to manifest in our physical world. … Our collective physical world.

Perhaps we are all in this together, after all … and even though we may never meet, or never know one anothers’ names, like hopeful monkeys we continue to wash our sweet potatoes until the whole Earth is clean and shiny new.

I look back at just the past year, and can’t help but wonder. Just one illustrative example?

The appearance:

A bizarre, rare autoimmune disease which for no reason anyone could find decided to destroy my right leg down to the muscle layers, crippling me and persisting so that, a year later, I’m still struggling to return to health.

The reality:

I’m walking again, my leg is healed, and if I bear an ugly scar it is a badge of honor, reminding me of what I’ve overcome.

What appears to be is pretty nasty. It leads so many people to ask me how I manage to keep my hopes up. I keep my hopes up because I believe in my heart that the reasons will appear, and my vision will manifest, and my reality will be a healthy one.

They say that the macrocosm is reflected in the microcosm. Is my leg just one person’s reflection of the entire Universe? Can we extend the same positive imagery to our planet, to our species? Can we who believe in Creative Thought not only repair our own apparent wounds, but add to the collective consciousness that will eventually create a beautiful, healthy future for our entire world?

I certainly will hold on to that vision. How about you? Shall we wash our ‘taters together?
