Looking for Junior Handlers, and kids who compete in all dog sports, to join and get the conversation going. Parents, judges, ex-Juniors, etc, are welcome as well!

If you join us, and have a nice photo you’d like to see used as the group profile picture, let me know! Maybe we can rotate “star of the week” pictures or something just for fun.

“For many years, the email list, JrShow-L was quite active, with Juniors, ex-Juniors, parents of Juniors and Juniors Judges joining in on the conversations. The kids made friends and offered each other support and encouragement. With the advent of social networking, and Facebook, as the Juniors on the list aged out…so did JrShow-L. I’m hoping to rekindle that kind of support by opening a Facebook Group of the same name, with the same purpose. Friendly conversation is encouraged, with the goal of mutual respect and helpfulness in mind. Discussion and sharing of all dog sports will be allowed and welcome here, as it’s great to see kids enjoying their canine friends no matter what sport they decide to participate in. Kids and Dogs Rule!”

E mail issues and addition

I’ve been having issues with my gazehound.com email addresses for some time now. For the most part, I’ve just been dealing with things individually as they come up. However, this evening, after another friend asked if an email had arrived (which hadn’t), I went on to the webmail interface. Though there appeared to be nothing there, when I logged out, my POP mail program suddenly download over 100 messages which had apparently been lost in space somewhere. The emails dated all the way back to mid November. I collected the addresses of those poor neglected folks, and BCC’d everyone with a sincere apology.

I’m posting this here, therefore, to try to prevent a repeat of such a problem.

If you email me at either of my gazehound.com addresses and don’t hear from me within a day, try resending the message to gayze.starr@gmail.com. I’m using that address more and more as the issues with my regular email system continue to occur.

Even during times when I’m crazy-busy, I will almost always reply to emails within a day, even if only to let you know I’ll respond more fully when I have time. A lack of a reasonably quick response is likely to indicate that the Black Hole got hungry again.

The Holiday Season Is Upon Us

Doesn’t it seem like the holidays come around faster and faster every year?

I’d like to wish all my US friends and their animal families a very happy Thanksgiving week!

Schedule Changes

As I’ve been posting on Twitter/Facebook, a medical procedure on Tuesday and our family celebrations Thursday will necessitate some changes in my schedule. I won’t be available either of those days at all, Sunday we’re having company so I’ll be unavailable then, as well. Saturday 11/19 is “pretty booked” already, too. Monday and Wednesday I will be here, but availability will be sporadic.

Holiday Special

One of my holiday traditions for years has been to run a holiday special on prepaid communication sessions. From Thanksgiving Day (this coming Thursday, 11/24) until January 6th (“Twelfth Night”, as the old traditions called it), I will therefore be running a special rate on “packages” of three sessions. While I already offer a reduced price for groups of prepaid sessions, for the Holiday Special you can purchase three sessions for $80.00.

Pyoderma Gangrenosum Facebook Page

As many know, I’ve once again been working through a major Pyoderma Gangrenosum flare. Though I’ve been updating the online journal (link at the right), for the most part I keep that separate from the things I post here on gazehound.com

Recently, however, one dear friend (and family member) suggested I start a “page” on Facebook, since so little is really known about this condition. I thought it was a good idea, ran it by a few other friends, and they all agreed that I should give it a shot.

So, this note is really just to announce this new page:

Although at the moment the handful of good folks who have “liked” it are my personal Facebook friends, and friends of theirs, I am hoping that the page will be found by medical professionals as well as other people who have personal experience with this disease. If we can make this an informational community, to share experiences and support, I think it will be a good thing for the many victims of P.G. out there in the long run.

It is a bit odd when one suffers with a bizarre syndrome that even most of the medical community has not heard of. In the course of the past three years, as I’ve done things like upload update videos to YouTube, I’ve been contacted by quite a few people who have either suffered with P.G. themselves, or have supported a loved one through this painful condition. There have, in fact, been enough people contacting me that I have begun to wonder if the numbers of “1 in 100,000″ that most research sites will quote as the Pyoderma Gangrenosum incidence are accurate.

If you know of someone who has experienced this disease, or medical professionals who wish to learn more so that they might recognize it before misdiagnosis makes the condition worse (as it did for me), please feel free to pass along the information. I would truly like to think that this new effort might help someone out there.

The Leg And I Are Home

The visit with Dr Resnick went well. He’s taking a conservative approach, and is starting me back on prednisone, at 30-mg/day to begin. He’ll be monitoring things carefully, and I’ll be in touch with my PCP tomorrow for things like monitoring blood glucose, etc.

It’s definitely the pyoderma gangrenosum again, so at least we know what direction we’re going in.

I am, therefore, available for sessions as normal, for those who had written to ask what the future might hold in that regard.

Thanks to all who’ve written with concern. Just going another round with the same old *&#!, I guess.

Hi, friends.

If you follow my Facebook or Twitter updates, you’re very likely already aware that my leg has “bloomed” badly again, and I’m therefore facing a health situation different from what I went through in 2008 only in that now we know what we’re dealing with. Or at least we think we know.

I have an emergency appointment with my wonderful Dr. Resnick, who saved the leg three years ago, tomorrow afternoon. I have no idea what the next step will be. None of the possible options are going to be fun, as the leg is very severe. I won’t gross you out with the details here, but clicking “Pyoderma Gangrenosum” on the right side link menu will allow those who wish to see the latest chapter of this horror story to view the updates (with photos). And trust me, I don’t blame you in the least if you’d rather not. I’d rather not, too…but the fact that the thing’s attached to my body kind of negates that option, eh?

I’ll try to keep people posted. If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll already be receiving updates. (Have already figured out how to do that on my new phone). I know there is also a WordPress app, so I may try installing that so I can post to the blog as well. “Just in case”, you know.

And of course the best hope is that these alternative contact options will be a moot point, and I’ll be right here at home and at work as always.

Beautiful Schoharie Valley

The Aftermath

As you all know, our lovely Schoharie Valley was decimated by the floodwaters caused by Tropical Storm Irene. Current news, though I have not confirmed it (it’s from a reliable source, though), is that over 30% of homes and businesses in my own village of Middleburgh will have to be condemned. The number in the village of Schoharie is 60%. Those that will be able to be reinhabited or reopened will be recovering for a very long time before that happens.

Many friends all over the world are asking "how can we help?" I have been posting assistance information and addresses on Facebook and Twitter, but I thought I would take this opportunity to share them all in one place on my blog and in my newsletter. If you feel moved to send a donation, you have the undying gratitude of the good people of Schoharie County.

IMPORTANT: I will be, at least part of the time, down at the NACSC each weekday helping to distribute needs to the flood victims. My "hours of operation", therefore, are going to be "catch me if you can" for a while. Please be patient as you wait for a session, and please consider email as the first preference, as it will be much easier to schedule everyone in that way.

ALSO: The most up-to-date way to keep track of where I am, when I’ll be out, and whether I’m going to be answering email in a timely manner is to follow me on Twitter and Facebook. Those, I can post to from my cellphone even while out, and I’m attempting to post a status update at least each morning. Links to both are in this issue. My personal Facebook page gets updated more readily/easily than the Gazehound’s page, so you may want to peek in at both if Facebook is easier for you than Twitter.
