Today, I felt the need to connect with Pree. Having recently passed her birthday, I’ve been missing her, and wishing for her to return to me soon. She had things she wanted to say, and our connection took the form of a conversation, which I now present for our website visitors’ enjoyment:

When I first died, I said I wanted to come home right away. I wanted to return to you, to be with my family again, to enjoy the petting and purring and physical touch. I knew I’d miss being petted, and I’d miss good food, and I’d miss all the things that being a kitty is all about.

Now that I’ve been in spirit for over a year, I understand that it isn’t so simple. Coming back to a body is not about what we want. It’s not even about what we need. It’s about the proper alignment of all factors of all beings involved. It’s about your path, and where you need to be … and all of the members of the family and the other characters in my story … as well as about me and mine. It’s about fulfilling the needs of spirit, not just the desires of body.

Look at what has happened since I died. If I had come right back into the family, I would not have had the same life. Things would have been strained, an added kitten would have been an added burden.

Pree, you could never be a burden to me.

Yes, I know you truly feel that, but look at the situation. Hospitals, wheel chairs, injuries, illnesses … and not just yours. You often feel so very sad that only one dog and one cat are left in your life, but how would you have truly taken care of more, considering all of the other things you have to deal with right now?

Devon has been wonderful about helping with the animals.

And how guilty do you feel about that?

I see what you mean….

It’s sounding like a bad thing, and I don’t mean it to. There is great joy in waiting, because if the stars are aligned just right, so to speak, that is when we will get the most out of our reunion. I know you miss me, I miss you, too. I miss pets and cuddles. I miss good food and playing games for treats. I miss snuggling with Sachet and the old-dogs. I miss bossing everybody around and running the house. (::she laughs::)

But I understand that, if the paths of everyone involved aren’t in the right place, returning will be “too soon”. We all have things to do now, trails to hike, lessons to learn. Look at all you are dealing with, and the lessons that are to be learned from your adventures, how ever strange they may be.

And just what are those lessons?

I don’t know, only you know that.

I wish I knew!

You do, though. You just haven’t manifested the reasons yet. Your spirit self knows … you need to be patient, because I’m certain they are good lessons, and things that you will be glad for in the end. You’re doing the Artist’s Way again, that’s a good thing, it will help you to listen when your spirit whispers the rhymes and reasons into your ear.

I hope so, Pree. I do wish you were here to walk with me.

But I am! I am here, and as hard as it is sometimes to accept, I am where I need to be.

It’s natural for people who lose their pets to want them back, to hope for reincarnation, to wonder when they can hold and cuddle with them again. It’s important, though, to understand that we are all where we need to be. While we do control our own destinies, some of the decisions of where and when are made from a higher plane. There are things to do in spirit, too, adventures to be had, and a great deal of growth to be attained.

We walk a physical path to gather the physical experiences needed to grow. We walk a spiritual path to gather the spiritual. I would say they are two very necessary halves of the whole, but I am wondering now if it’s more like the physical is one third, and the spiritual two thirds, of that experience. If we spend all our time in the physical, the spirit-world may not get the attention it needs.

And what do you do in the spirit-world? What lessons are you learning, what adventures are you having?

Well, much of that is what each individual needs to discover for herself, and it’s not something to be shared. I think, perhaps, that it is even different for every soul, so even if I should share with you everything I may come to know during this spirit interval, it would only apply to me.

I can tell you that a lot of time is spent reflecting on the things that happened in my most recent incarnation; examining those experiences and “feeling” how they fit into the whole of who I am. My time lost in the wilderness, for instance, was very significant to both my path and yours … and, though they may feel it less, to everyone who was involved either directly or indirectly. It’s all connected. We all influence one another’s walks in ways that are sometimes subtle, sometimes quite obvious. Although time is not really a concept we need to worry about once we are out of our bodies … in fact, cats don’t worry much about it even when they are in their bodies (::chuckles::), I can paint this analogy: For every moment of experience in the physical world, there are lifetimes of ripples, absorbing, learning, and integrating that can be enjoyed from that experience. Even the bad experiences can bring joy when reflected upon from a spiritual perspective.

We in spirit, especially those new to spirit such as myself, also require time (again, “time” is really a metaphor because it’s hard to explain the timelessness and non-linear way we move through the spirit-world), also enjoy being without form, and not confined by physical limitations. This is very strange at first. Some of us take to it quickly and like to just zoom about, others are more deliberate about it and examine it in baby steps.

I would say that all of these things take time, but in truth they can take eons, or they can all be accomplished in the time it takes to think a thought. This is a choice, how long is spent, though one understands quickly that it must be given the depth and respect it needs to bless the soul with growth and development. When, and if, an animal returns to a body, is as much about what is happening in the physical world it will inhabit, as about what it is doing in spirit. It has to do with the spiritual paths of loved ones, and where they need to be in comparison with one’s own. It’s not something that can be rushed.

I’d say that to rush it would mess things up, but that is also a metaphor. Literally, it can not be rushed. It is just not going to happen until all of the cards in the hands of all of the players are just right. To ask a pet in spirit “when will you return”, the pet can feel that summer is right, but if someone who is involved takes a turn in their path that is unexpected between death and summer, then things will readjust till the path is right again.

My desire when I first passed was to return right away. Had you, and others (it’s not all about you, Mom ::laughs::), not had unusual and unexpected lessons to learn, maybe I would have. Maybe not, for I’ve learned so much since then, too.

Just because we’re dead doesn’t mean we can see every detail of the future.

But, however it happens … it’s right. Choices made from a higher plane can sometimes steer the path away from what the physical self is expecting. This is, in part, why it’s important for those who consciously apply the “law of attraction” (that you like to think about so much) to learn to listen to their “selves”. By listening to the deeper self, it’s more likely that you will be able to touch in with the higher self, and make choices, paint visions, dream dreams that walk a physical path parallel to your spiritual one.

That, too, is why a pet might not return when the person hopes they will … or even when the pet herself thinks she will. It happens when it happens because the circumstances are right.

Jai came back to you as Kai even though you weren’t expecting it. He came when he did not only because Jai was ready … but because your own higher self knew you would need him when you needed him.

I’ll do the same. Some day, soon. “Soon”, of course, is part of that metaphor called Time.

But I do miss the good foods…. Save me a bite of donut.

Happy Birthday, Pree. You would have been eighteen years old today, had you kept your body longer. But I still celebrate eighteen years from the day you won my heart.

Thank you, my little friend, for all that you have given me.

Intro to this “session”: I was just touching in with Pree this morning, because I’ve wanted, for some time, to give her another chance to share. I began reaching for her with the silly thought that I don’t know what to write about. Her response was “You think too much.” That led to an interesting exchange, much of which was personal, but through which she shared some (as she does so often) interesting wisdom.

While we were talking about muscle atrophy (this will make sense if you’ve followed my pyoderma gangrenosum blog at all), Pree stated, “The heart’s a muscle, too”(*). That evolved into a discussion of how so many of our physical-world symptoms are based in thoughts, emotions, and spiritual connections.

And that led to the “topic” for today’s post from Pree.

The Spiritual Connection

Most people don’t think about cats, or other animals at all, as spiritual beings. Maybe this is because people forget to consider the spiritual aspects of life … of everything around them. Cats do have spiritual thoughts … even if they might not really think of it that way unless the subject is brought up. Everything a cat does is “connected” in some way. Cats are very aware of vibration, and just like they can hear tones lower and higher than people can, they tend to tune into vibrations which are lower and higher than human-people are commonly aware of.

It takes a person some effort to really feel the spiritual connections around them. People who want to reach for that higher vibrational level do things like pray and meditate, and sometimes they find that connection in dream states. Cats, on the other hand, accept the higher (and lower) vibrations of spirit as part of their every day life. It’s like always being subliminally aware of the connection to a different plane. Since we cats are also very much in-tuned with the survival of the body, our actions often follow that path, while at the same time keeping that connection to spirit “present”.

I’ve heard you talk about how some cats, or maybe most cats, seem able to traverse the barriers between realities more easily than people do. This is because cats, and many animals, don’t see the change of vibration as a “barrier” … but rather an “opening”. People have a tendency to think that connecting to spirit is hard work, something they have to reach and strive for. Cats, on the other hand, see it as something that is natural and simple.

Do you know why cats purr? It raises our vibrations.

Okay, that’s not the only reason, but it’s a big one. When a cat sits quietly and purrs, the connection to spirit draws closer, becomes stronger. Purring is like prayer to a cat. You’ve heard people say, and I’ve heard you advise others, that cats purr because they’re comfortable and grateful, and they purr because they are seeking comfort.

Isn’t that also why humans pray?

You talk a lot about this whole law of attraction thing. Sometimes it’s in a positive light and at other times you talk and write about it because you have to get your brain back on track.

It is easier to keep thoughts in a positive frame if you always honor the spiritual aspects.

Most cats will tell you “of course” if you ask them, “is there a God?” Animals are often very aware, on a basic, instinctual level, that there is a Creator who provides, and that their actions, their thoughts, their emotions, can bring them into line with those provisions as needed. When a prey animal falls victim to a predator, the mouse or bird doesn’t think of himself as a victim … that is a very human way of looking at it. Humans are often as disconnected from the natural way of life that is the predator-prey dance as they are disconnected from the natural link to spirit that exists in every breath. But that’s another post. Even when an animal gives itself to the sustenance of another, there is gratitude for having been an intricate part of that provision. Yes, there may also be fear or pain, but those things are only physical, and the spiritual connection and awareness not only doesn’t go away, it intensifies when physical considerations are no longer demanding attention.

The Divine is a part of each step, of each breath. It is in everything we touch, everything we see. Even things that seem “bad” when you look at them from a worldly perspective can be found to have that spark of Divine. Much of this depends on what we learn from the situation, or how we react to it, or how we can reach out from the darkness to not only find, but spread, light.

Do you remember that John Edward show we watched where the parents lost their little boy? You were so sad, but when the mommy said, “Always blessings, never losses”, for just a moment you truly felt that spiritual connection. You saw the Divine in that child’s death.

It’s always there. Sometimes finding the Divine in tragedy hurts even more than the pain … but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. Tears can be cleansing and are often so necessary to spiritual growth.

When I died, it was so sudden, and unexpected, that even I could not, at that moment, see the Divine in it. But remember the ride home from the vet? I stood on the dashboard and shouted, “Wheeeee!” You thought you had lost it, and were crazy, then. I’m not saying you’re not crazy … but that doesn’t really matter. What did matter was, that was Divine freedom, and later, when your heart stopped hurting quite so sharply, you did recognize that.

Always blessings, never losses.

That is a hard thing to grasp, and once grasped, it’s hard to hang on to. But it’s always true, and always there.

Cats breathe the spiritual connection. They don’t always give “thought” to it, they just feel it and recognize it. Gratitude is a purr that can always reach a higher vibration. Even when things hurt, even when the physical world seems to be moving the wrong way, if you can purr for a bit, and find that higher connection, you’ll see the good in the situation. Seeing the good means feeling grateful, and gratitude is a key emotion to turning the physical back in the direction you prefer it to go.

The heart is a muscle, and will atrophy if you let it forget that all is Divine. Gratitude is the exercise the heart needs to grow strong again, and once the heart starts to feel stronger, the rest of the body will follow as you allow it.

The key to gratitude, is to acknowledge Spirit in every breath.

***

Footnote: I plan to blog more thoroughly about “The heart’s a muscle, too” in the near future. I feel it’s a tidbit that deserves expansion. Thank you, Pree.
