Keeping up with the longer works of fiction.

Wildlife and Mysteries

Wild Wings of Danger, the second book in the series, introduces the readers to wildlife, a wildlife rescue center, raptors (birds of prey), and many of the ins and outs of taking care of wild animals for release. Of course, the dog show scene still figures prominently in the story, as well–our heroes are junior handlers, after all. In “Wings”, however, the kids’ education, and their world of adventure, branches out in a new direction. There is a great deal for them, and the reader, to learn, and (thanks, of course, to Merlin) the kids do a lot of that learning the hard way! As with all of the Junior Handler Mysteries, however, never fear–that learning process will certainly not be a boring one. Continue reading

Helping Hounds

My first Saluki, Yoda, was a cream Saluki like Merlin. He was a very special hound, the kind of dog whom true dog lovers refer to as a “heart dog”. Heart dogs come along only a few times in a lifetime, or at least that’s my belief. Continue reading

Books And Wildlife

I met Wes and Bruce, from the NY Wildlife Rescue Center, at the Wildlife Festival yesterday. The event was located at the Visitor’s Center of the NY Power Authority facility in Blenheim, NY, which is only about a half hour south of home. It was a beautiful day, sunny and not too hot, the colors just starting to really pop on the surrounding fall foliage. We had quite a nice crowd, and I had the privilege of meeting some lovely people and talking to enthusiastic readers, some of whom bought copies of The Corpse That Wasn’t There. Continue reading

Kids and Pets, a Great Combination

In a previous blog post, I mentioned that one of my key inspirations for writing the Junior Handlers Mystery Series were the kids on my JrShow-L list. I’ve always had pets in our household, and my children were raised to love and respect animals. Though neither was a Junior Handler, they both have a special bond with our pets. My daughter grew to be a “cat person”, my son loves to help with all the animals in our family (or perhaps I should say menagerie, since I have been doing songbird rescue). I’ve always felt that having animals around is great for children, and helps to develop their sense of responsibility, as well as their innate respect for all living things.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychology apparently agrees. Continue reading

A Little Background on ‘Corpse’

I was never a Junior Handler. So, why am I so enthusiastic about the sport that I’d write an entire series of mystery stories surrounding it? Continue reading
