Thank you so much! I'm so very pleased to hear how helpful your local group was.

This is a wonderful suggestion ... for those in other areas, a call to your local shelter, or perhaps your vet's office, may lead you to similar group sessions in your own area.

A psychologist offers free pet bereavement group therapy at the Alexandria, VA, animal shelter on the first Wednesday or Thursday of each month. You do NOT need to be an Alexandria resident. Check with the shelter for the exact date. I think she also offers this at one more shelter in the Washington, DC area, but I don't remember which one it is.

I found the sessions very helpful, especially after my first cat, Rabbit, died. I had a very vivid dream (or visitation) in which Rabbit made it clear that what had happened was for the best, and I awoke feeling healed of my grief. The psychologist at the pet bereavement sessions acknowledges the healing power of dreams like this, and if you have had one, she'll ask you to describe it for the others.

I've accompanied friends to these sessions, and they felt they benefitted as well.
