RAOKA’s monthly theme for November was Beauty. I didn’t think it would be as difficult as it was to spread beauty, but it turned out that I didn’t really have a lot of opportunity to do so.
I sent a couple of hand-made e-cards, using my photos, to various friends who sounded like they could use cheering up. I knitted a pretty burgundy scarf for my daughter, using a color that I absolutely am in love with. (That burgundy is destined to become a pair of socks very soon, in fact). But really? That was about it!
I’m still somewhat handicapped, and unable to get out and about much on my own. So, I guess I don’t feel that my giving of beauty is a great success.
However, receiving beauty … that is always all around me.
My new friend Sami in Australia sent me a bouquet of cyber-flowers recently, which thoroughly touched my heart. I sat and watched the snow falling not long ago, mesmerized as I watched the little individual flakes that landed on the miniature spruce outside our bedroom window. The huge moon the other night, though obscured at home by cloud cover, was shared with me by many friends who managed to get photos in a clear night sky. My own personal newest obsession, knitting, has led me to appreciate the subtle pleasure of colors and patterns that go along with the hobby.
They say that Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder. The key to that is to make sure one’s eyes are open. Remain aware as you walk through your day, and the wonder of Beauty will be set before you in often surprising ways.
We live in a varied and wondrous universe. Behold.

Hey Gayze, seems to me you did your share of spreading beauty! Handmade cards and a scarf would take me a year to get together! And they are totally heartfelt ways to spread beauty so definitely mission accomplished in my opinion. Glad you enjoyed the flowers!

Thanks, Sami! This month’s theme of “wacky” is going to be such fun!
Hello Fellow RAOKA Traveler!
I had a love affair with knitting for awhile. There’s nothing more soothing than grabbing a pair of needles and some wool and creating something. I have one beautiful red scarf still around as evidence. I learned to knit from my mother when I was a little girl. When I need that kind of “calming down”, it re-surfaces as a hobby to help me heal. I’d like to add to your month of Beauty with some photos of things that were knitted – balaclavas! Think of them as sweaters for your head. Guaranteed to make you smile! My new hobby is martial arts so I’m afraid there’s a healthy dose of combat included in honor of a friend of mine who was preparing for a major competition at the time I wrote the story. I hope you enjoy it! I hope you get my sense of humor too. lol!

Hi, Cheryl! Thanks so much for stopping by. I loved the balaclava post … and it had never occurred to me that the warm and toasty “hat with the eye holes” originated as part of chain mail armor! How cool is that? Or warm? Or….
And now I want to learn to knit balaclavas … just so I can keep saying the word. Balaclava, balaclava….
